1989 Mercedes-Benz 300SL
This silver Mercedes R129 300SL was built in November 1989, and first registered in Florida in 1990. It moved to the US east coast (New York and Virginia) in 2008. It remained in regular use since the time we acquired it, with an emissions check in November 2024 and a valid registration until the end of 2025.
An old service invoice from 2020 is present, as well as a service sticker. The odometer currently reads 96.288 miles. At this point in time, the car shows various cosmetic flaws and is in need of a thorough mechanical check up. It should be considered a project car.
The original silver exterior paint looks well from a distance, but shows various small scratches, scuffs and other imperfections on closer look. Most noticeable are clear coat issues on the bonnet and trunk lid. The front bumper is damaged at the lower lip and should be replaced. The bonnet hinges and latches need to be adjusted, as the right hand side does not close properly.
The car wears a black hard top. As the electronic roof module (also controlling the power windows) does not work, we could not check the condition of the soft top. Assume it needs to be replaced, including a rebuild of all hydraulic cylinders – which is to be expected at this age.
The body is solid, with no evidence of rust or prior collision damage, except for the front bumper. The VIN report shows no signs of damage history. It does indicate a mileage issue (listed as ‘not actual miles’) from its time in Florida. However, since the mileage entries logically ascend, we suspect this to be just an administrative flaw.
Mechanically, the car runs and drives but requires a comprehensive check-up to ensure reliability. Points to address include an engine oil leak, and an occasional rattle at stationary rpm. Tyres are relatively new and have plenty of profile left. Oil pressure is excellent.
The interior is in need of cosmetic attention and some electrical repairs. The leather seat upholstery needs to be replaced and the wood panels and some of the plastic trim show wear and tear.
A low-priced R129 project car that’s well worth the effort for a practical enthusiast.
